WHEN "EDEN" CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN

Marcy Walker comes to Santa Barbara after 45 episodes from the beginning. At the time she was very famous thanks to the role of Liza Colby on All My Children. Bridget Dobson, SB creator, managed to convince her to go to SB, saying: "Eden will be ten times more interesting than Liza." So Marcy Walker accepted the challenge and as soon as her contract allowed her, she launched on SB. Literally. In fact the arrival of Eden was rather bizarre: Eden  wanted to celebrate her father’ birthday and then she returned to SB on board a small plane from which she launched with a parachute. Not before having flirted with the pilot. From the beginning, Eden is a character sexually uninhibited. So Eden ends up landing on the Lockridge garden.... into the arms of the young Warren Lockridge (John Allen Nelson). The choice was not accidental: the writers originally thought of giving birth to a love story between the two. But when they noticed that the chemistry between A Martinez (Cruz) and Walker was crackling, unlike the one with the young Lockridge, they decided to groped an interracial love story. So they gave life to one of the most popular super couples of all time. In the video you can see the incredible arrival of Eden. IAN ABERCROMBIE (EX-BUTLER PHILIP ON SB) DIES AT 77

Abercrombie died in Hollywood, California on 26 January 2012, aged 77, from undisclosed causes. He made his American stage debut in 1955 in a production of Stalag 17 with Jason Robards and Jules Munshin. But we all remember him as the butler Philip at the Capwell Mansion: the dear old Philip! It is on a silver tray that Philip gives a note to Channing Jr. This note will lead him to his fate : he will be murdered by his own mother, Sophia. But this is another story. So he appears from the very first episode, but gradually he disappeared in favor of Rosa Andrade, who later became the true Capwell’  household. So after seven months we no longer see Philip, without any explanation. Later Abercrombie  guest-starred in many television series such as Seinfeld, The Nanny, Wizards of Waverly Place and Babylon 5. The role of the butler in Santa Barbara was a kind of premonition for him: in fact, Abercrombie once again played a butler on the movie Garfield and on Desperate Housewives. And we want to remember him in this way. Goodbye Mr. Abercrombie!

20.000 VISITORS!!

Santa Barbara Blog has reached a great achievement in these days: 20.000 visitors in six months. I really do not know how to thank you all. You grew more and more, that makes me happy and gives me more incentive to continue with it  and do it better. I am not happy for me. I am happy because even though 19 years are passed from the cancellation of SB, the interest in this show is still high and continues to grow. Guys, this is not what normally happens with other shows. Between 19 years someone will still remember The Kardashians or The Chew? AN EXCLUSIVE AND UNUSUAL INTERVIEW WITH MICHAEL FAIRMAN

One of the leading experts in the field of daytime drama, Michael Fairman has had over seventeen years experience in the medium. Michael has been an innovator in the field developing new concepts for the soap opera genre. He has also been a writer/producer in the on-air promotions department for ABC Daytime and SOAPnet, creating numerous spots for various soaps and image campaigns. For the past five years, Michael’s feature interviews with the top stars of the genre have become a mainstay for this fortnightly publication. During this interview we will examine the daytime soap operas and especially "Santa Barbara". Your soaps came to Italy in the 80’s. Capitol, Loving, Santa Barbara, B & B and Guiding Light were the most successful . In Italy the other soaps have been resounding failures and they aired briefly. Capitol, Loving and SB aired until their last episodes. B&B and GL still airing here. How can you explain these differences between our ratings and yours? 

I think all the soaps that you name except for Santa Barbara and Guiding Light; they had the benefit of being half hour soaps.  And, it has been proven in ratings and popularity that globally, the half-hour soap format seems to work best. B&B is widely popular and airing in over 100 plus countries.  A lot also has to do with the fact that shows owned by ABC Daytime such as GH, OLTL (now cancelled), AMC (now cancelled); the networks did not put such an aggressive effort to get huge international distribution. B&B, for instance has there own international department.  But ultimately, the style of the shows like SB, B&B, etc had high-camp elements and drama and glamour that other nations seem to gravitate too.

SB began in 1984 and it ended in 1993. Throughout its existence, it remained at the bottom of ratings, but it has won year after year, huge critical acclaim: with 24 Emmys and several Soap Opera Digest Award. I remember clearly the first episode: the murder of the young Channing Jr., the humor of Dame Judith Anderson (Minx), the natural talent of the wonderful Robin Wright (Kelly Capwell) ... All in one episode! I stood thunderstruck! Which are the innovations that SB introduced in daytime?

Santa Barbara was quirky and unusual and was written extremely well. They went out and hired a mix of well-known actors, not only from the soaps, but from primetime and motion pictures, and added in some fresh faces.  But, once the show was starting to get into a groove, and to help bolster their ratings, they would get the hottest stars and most-known names in daytime to come over and play a new role.  Look at Jack Wagner, Justin Deas, and Kim Zimmer ….. the list goes on and on.  It was very, very special show.

Which are the SB’ weaknesses?

At times, it was mish-mash of stories and characters, and this had to do more with all the writing and producing regimes being shown the front door, than the performances.

Another reason that made me fall in love with SB is that SB was not afraid to take risks and to dare. For example, when they decided to kill Mary crushing her with a big C. Mary was a much beloved character at that time and a soap generally tends to use its beloved characters until the end. And then when Eden was raped by Zack (Leigh McCloskey), the gynaecologist who examined her after the rape. What do you think about that? 

I think everyone remembers Mary getting crushed by the giant C.  It was pretty brilliant and original and unexpected! As far as the gynaecologist story, it was very risky.  Especially, in light of the fact, that many women who watch soaps may be uncomfortable with their gynaecologists. In terms of story, yes, it was controversial, and kind of fits in with Santa Barbara’s outlandish and shocking stories.   Looking back on it, I am sure they should have re-thought that one. I don’t think that would get past certain network Standards and Practices today, but who knows?  Soaps sometimes do what they have to do to try and garner ratings!

Which are the reasons that led to the cancellation of SB?

Santa Barbara was rolling along and garnering ratings increases and won three consecutive Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Drama Series.  Here it was the critical darling, similar to Ryan’s Hope’s streak of Emmy wins.  But from 1988- through to the end in 1993, the Dobsons (the creators) had trouble with NBC thus causing head writing changes, and then multiple executive producer changes, and the show was just loosing its footing and the ratings were dropping.  Pam Long came in at the end as head writer, and added new characters that apparently no one wanted to see!

Some actors who made their debut on a soap do not deny their past (such as Julianne Moore), while others seem to be ashamed of it (Robin Wright). I love Robin Wright, but in a recent interview she seemed annoyed by the questions related to SB. The fans suffer this kind of attitude / approach...What do you think?

I think there is a notion that if an actor becomes a “soap” actor that is all they will ever be and there is still to this day a huge stigma attached to it.   Some embrace their roots and their starts such as Julienne Moore and Nathan Fillion, and some perhaps as you say like Robin Wright, might not want it brought up during a press  interview when they want to discuss their current movie etc, and not hark back to their beginnings.  It will be very interesting what happens now that the American daytime soap operas are dying off one by one.  What will be the next place an actor can get their start in television? Will that have a stigma too?  Soap operas have and had some of the most unbelievable acting talent I have ever seen.  

The SB creators were Bridget & Jerome Dobsons. What kind of writers they were? And why they disappeared after SB?

The Dobsons were good writers, depending on the soap they were working on.   But they always ended up in lawsuits and legal trouble with the shows they created (GH, too), and this was the case with Santa Barbara, This caused their disappearance, only to return to the show later as head writers for a year and half before its final demise.

You have interviewed many soap stars. Which is SB reputation?

I can tell you that my favorite all-time interviews with any one from the cast of Santa Barbara are with A Martinez (Cruz).  This man, is without a doubt, the kindest and most thoughtful actor to conduct an interview with.  A was extremely kind to me on a recent episode of my On-Air On-Soaps Podcast, when we were promoting his recent guest star appearances on B&B.  He remembers the night at the Daytime Emmys, when I told him I knew he was going to win for Lead Actor that year.   He had mentioned that made him feel very good going into the evening, that myself and others were showing him love on his big night.   I will never forget A winning his much-deserved Emmy, and giving him a big hug afterwards. 

In the last four years four soaps have been canceled and since 1999 no new soap has been produced. It's 'obvious that the soap genre is in steep decline. I do not think the fault is ONLY the high production costs and the success of reality shows. The main fault in my opinion is that the soaps have not been able to reinvent themselves. They have been the same for decades. Following what circumstances does it come time to cancel a soap?

You are correct.  I have always preached and tried to explore with the individual soap series, the networks and their marketing and promotions departments ways to expand the soap audience, and ways to move in into the current mindset of the viewing audience.  The world has changed significantly since the 80’s and 90’s and the beginning of the new millennium and soaps never changed their format with the prototypes.  Guiding Light attempted a horrendous experiment that drove them further into the ground with shooting in Peapack and making it more “realistic” because the production values were so awful.  But that being said, the networks in the U.S. are now only concerned with the business economics of shows.  So, if The Chew costs 40% less than AMC, then so be it.  AMC ratings were not good for years.   So as to  your question of when to pull a soap – low ratings, horrific writing and producing, but only if you can’t come up with a plan to reinvigorate it, and only if you think you have a sure bet replacement that will be worth giving up the loyal viewers that still hang in there every day.  In my mind, daytime programming in the U.S is no longer must-see appointment television with the influx of game shows, talk shows, and the reality/makeover shows.  And, I don’t think women want to watch this all day long, and they have so much as told me through many comments and post on my website.

And now few quick questions: Which is your favorite soap of all time?

One Life to Live… so I am deeply saddened that it was cancelled.

And the best soap ever?

Got to go with my One Life to Live on that one, too.

The worst?

There are so many! (Laughs)  I have a tie – NBC’s For Richer For Poorer and The City (the camera work made me seasick!)

The most overrated soap?

Of all-time? Or currently? 

Currently...

Currently, in the U.S., I would have to say, The Young and the Restless.   The stories have been difficult to get into and follow which I hope changes since they have the most amazing cast at its disposal!

The most underrated?

Again, One Life to Live!

The most conventional?

I think As the World Turns was your very original conventional show as was Guiding Light in the truest sense of what the Soap Opera was at its core. I also think DAYS was very conventional, and as things started to evolve in our culture these shows began to deviate from that.

The less conventional?

I loved Edge of Night – there was always a new murder mystery unfolding, and some of the characters were so out there and wild.  The last few years though of EON were dreadful though.  And yes, we can throw Santa Barbara in there too as a close second, and you can throw in One Life to Live as well.

This interview is designed primarily for the Italian public. In our country, “Santa Barbara” was very much loved and followed. Have you ever been to Italy? What do you know about our country? Do you want to say something to the Italian public? 

Oh Italy!  I have wanted so much and for so long to visit your country.  It has been number one on my list for years!  Here is a true story; I had my visa and was all set to come to Italy in 2001 with The Bold and the Beautiful.  When I was in charge of SoapCity.com, we created a contest to send your designs in and have them judged by the actors who play The Spectras and The Forresters and win a trip to Italy! B&B had this big Italian remote planned with stops in Venice, Florence and Portofino.  We had the contest, chose the winners, and I was all set for my big trip and then 9/11 happened!  You see, our trip was a scheduled for October. Needless to say, B&B cancelled their travel plans, I never saw your beautiful country, but I still have the visa and got it renewed! So, god-willing, hopefully in the next few years, I will make it there.   I can tell you also that my national soccer team is and always, has been Italy, and when they won the World Cup, I was ecstatic!  I am a huge fan of Luca Toni, (where is he now btw? I miss him!) And, I wear all the Italian World Cup t-shirts around Los Angeles.  I have many versions of it!

Nel corso di questa intervista prenderemo in esame alcune soap opera ed in particolare “Santa Barbara”. Le soap americane arrivarono in Italia negli anni ’80. Quelle che ebbero più successo furono Capitol, Quando si ama, Santa Barbara, Beautiful e Sentieri. Tutte le altre soap nel nostro Paese ebbero vita breve a causa di bassi ascolti. Come spiegheresti le differenze di gradimento tra gli USA e l’Italia?

Penso che tutte le soap che hai appena nominato, tranne Santa Barbara e Sentieri, avevano il vantaggio di durare mezz'ora. Inoltre, ed è stato dimostrato dagli ascolti e dalla popolarità a livello mondiale, le soap di minore durata sembrano funzionare meglio. Beautiful è molto popolare e viene trasmesso in più di 1oo Nazioni. A dimostrazione di questo, basti pensare che alcuni Network non hanno messo un impegno simile per ottenere una maggiore distribuzione internazionale, basti pensare alle soap di proprietà della ABC come General Hospital, Una vita da vivere (ora cancellata), La valle dei pini (ora cancellata). Beautiful per esempio ha un apposito ufficio dedicato alla distribuzione internazionale. Oltre a questo, show come Santa Barbara e Beautiful erano caratterizzati da elementi di dramma e glamour di altissima qualità che gli Stati esteri sembrano amare particolarmente.

Santa Barbara è iniziata nel 1984 e si è conclusa nel 1993. Nel corso della sua esistenza è rimasta al fondo della classifica degli ascolti, ma ha conquistato anno dopo anno un successo di critica enorme, vincendo 24 premi Emmy e numerosi Soap Opera Digest Award. Ricordo chiaramente il primo episodio: l’omicidio del giovane Channing Jr, l'umorismo di Dame Judith Anderson (Minx), il talento naturale della splendida Robin Wright (Kelly Capwell) ... Tutto in un solo episodio! Io rimasi folgorato! Quali sono le innovazioni  introdotte da SB nel daytime?

Santa Barbara era eccentrica ed inusuale ed era scritta molto bene. Riuscirono ad ingaggiare un mix di attori noti, non solo nelle soap, ma anche in prima serata e nel cinema, e ad essi aggiunsero alcune facce nuove. Ma, una volta che lo spettacolo stava iniziando a lasciare un importante segno e pensando di accrescere gli ascolti, cominciarono ad ingaggiare le Star più importanti e i nomi più noti nel daytime per interpretare nuovi personaggi. Per esempio Jack Wagner, Justin Deas e Kim Zimmer ...e la lista potrebbe continuare all'infinito. Santa Barbara è stata una soap molto, molto speciale.

Quali erano i punti deboli di Santa Barbara?

In alcuni momenti è stato un guazzabuglio di storie e personaggi, e questo era la diretta espressione dei troppi cambiamenti di scrittori e produttori più che causa della performance degli attori.

Un altro motivo che mi ha fatto innamorare di SB è che questo show non aveva paura di rischiare e di osare. Per esempio, quando decisero di uccidere Mary schiacciandola sotto una grande C. Mary era un personaggio molto amato in quel momento e una soap tende generalmente ad utilizzare i suoi personaggi più amati il più possibile. E poi mi viene in mente quando Eden è stata violentata da Zack (Leigh McCloskey), il ginecologo che l'ha esaminata dopo lo stupro. Cosa ne pensi?

Credo che davvero tutti ricordino Mary mentre viene schiacciata dalla gigante C. Fu una scelta piuttosto brillante, originale e inaspettata! Per quanto riguarda la storia del ginecologo, io credo che fu molto rischiosa. Soprattutto alla luce del fatto che molte donne che guardano le soap rischiarono di sentirsi a disagio con i loro ginecologi. In termini di storia, sì, era controversa e in perfetta sintonia con le storie stravaganti e scioccanti tipiche di Santa Barbara. Guardando al passato, sono sicuro che avrebbero dovuto valutare meglio se fosse il caso di proporre questa storia. Comunque non credo che andasse oltre lo standard della rete e oltre a ciò che succede oggi, ma chi lo sa? Le soap a volte fanno quello che fanno per cercare di aumentare gli ascolti!

Quali sono i motivi che condussero alla cancellazione di Santa Barbara?

La popolarità di Santa Barbara aumentava sempre di più, così come i suoi ascolti. Ha vinto tre Emmy consecutivi come miglior serie drammatica. Era la soap più amata dalla critica, un po’ come “I Ryan”. Ma a partire dal 1988 - fino alla fine nel 1993 - i Dobson (i creatori) hanno avuto grossi problemi con la NBC a causa del licenziamento di una Headwriter, inoltre si susseguirono numerosi produttori esecutivi e lo show cominciò a perdere il suo status e anche gli ascolti precipitarono. Pam Long fu l’ultima headwriter e decise di introdurre nuovi personaggi che a quanto pare nessuno voleva vedere!

Alcuni attori tra quelli che hanno debuttato in una soap non rinnegano il loro passato (come Julianne Moore), mentre altri sembrano vergognarsene (ad esempio Robin Wright). Amo Robin Wright, ma in una recente intervista lei sembrava infastidita dalle domande relative a SB. I fans soffrono questo tipo di atteggiamento / approccio ... Che ne pensi?

Penso che ci sia una sorta di credenza secondo cui se un attore comincia con una  soap, lui/lei resterà per sempre un “attore di soap” e vi è ancora oggi una stigmatizzazione enorme a questo riguardo. Alcuni accettano le loro radici e i loro inizi, come Julianne Moore e Nathan Fillion, e alcuni altri, come dici tu, come Robin Wright, non desiderano farlo soprattutto durante una conferenza stampa in cui vogliono discutere dei loro attuali film, e non fanno quindi riferimento ai loro inizi. Sarà molto interessante vedere quello che succederà ora che le soap opera americane stanno morendo una dopo l’altra. Quale sarà il prossimo posto in cui un attore potrà iniziare la sua carriera in televisione? Sarà che hanno stigmatizzato troppo le soap? Resta il fatto che le soap opera contano su alcuni dei più incredibili talenti di recitazione che io abbia mai visto.

I creatori di SB erano Bridget e Jerome Dobson. Che tipo di scrittori erano e perché scomparvero dopo SB?

I Dobson erano buoni scrittori, a seconda della soap a cui stavano lavorando. Ma sono sempre finiti in azioni legali e problemi legali con gli spettacoli che hanno creato (anche General Hospital) e questo era il caso di Santa Barbara. Questo ha causato la loro scomparsa, solo per tornare in SB più tardi come capo sceneggiatori  per un anno e mezzo prima della cancellazione definitiva.

Tu hai intervistato innumerevoli soap-stars. Qual è la reputazione di SB?

Posso dirti che la mia intervista preferita in assoluto con qualcuno del cast di SB è stata quella con A Martinez (Cruz). Quest'uomo, è senza dubbio l'attore più gentile e premuroso che ci sia da intervistare. A è stato estremamente gentile con me a proposito di un recente episodio del mio Podcast “On-Air On-Soaps”, quando stavamo promuovendo la sua recente apparizione come guest star in Beautiful. Si ricordava di quella notte ai Daytime Emmy Awards, quando gli dissi che mi sentivo che lui stava per vincere come Miglior Attore Protagonista. Aveva detto che le mie parole gli fecero affrontare bene quella serata, perchè io e gli altri dimostravamo affetto per lui durante quel momento così importante. Non dimenticherò mai la sua meritatissima vittoria, e dopo gli diedi un grande abbraccio.

Negli ultimi quattro anni quattro soap sono state cancellate e dal 1999 nessuna nuova soap è stata prodotta. E’ ovvio che il genere soap è in forte declino. Non penso che la colpa sia attribuibile esclusivamente agli elevati costi di produzione e al successo dei reality show. Il difetto principale, a mio parere, è che le soap non sono state capaci di reinventarsi. Sono rimaste identiche per decenni. In seguito a quali circostanze arriva il momento di cancellare una soap?

Hai ragione. Con le singole soap, con le reti televisive e con il loro ufficio marketing, ho sempre cercato di trovare nuovi modi per allargare il pubblico delle soap e strategie per stare al passo con l’attuale mentalità del pubblico. Il mondo è cambiato in maniera significativa dagli anni '80 e '90 e le soap non hanno mai cambiato la loro forma e sostanza. Sentieri ha tentato un esperimento orrendo ricorrendo a numerose esterne a Peapack per rendersi più "realistica" poichè  gli ascolti erano decisamente pessimi. Ma ciò detto, le reti televisive negli Stati Uniti sono ora interessate solo agli aspetti economici aziendali delle soap. Quindi, se “The Chew” costa il 40% meno di AMC, allora così sia. Gli ascolti di AMC non sono stati buoni per anni. Così per tornare alla tua domanda in merito a quando arriva il momento  per cancellare una soap, risponderei dicendo: bassi ascolti, orribili sceneggiature e produzione, ma solo se non si riesce ad escogitare un piano per rinvigorirle, e solo se si pensa di avere un valido sostituto sul quale scommettere e per il quale valga la pena rinunciare al fedele pubblico della soap. A parer mio, la programmazione diurna negli Stati Uniti non è più un appuntamento imperdibile con l’avvento di quiz, talk show e reality. E non credo che le donne abbiano voglia di vedere questo genere di programmi, come mi hanno raccontato attraverso molti commenti e post sul mio sito.

E ora alcune domande veloci: qual è la tua soap preferita in assoluta?

Una vita da vivere ...quindi sono profondamente addolorato dal momento che è stata appena cancellata.

Sempre la mia cara Una vita da vivere.

La peggiore?

Ce ne sono così tante! (Ride). A pari merito direi “For Richer For Poorer” della NBC e “The City” – lo spin off di “Quando si ama” (il movimento della telecamera mi faceva venire il mal di mare!)

La soap più sopravvalutata?

Di tutti i tempi? O attualmente?

Attualmente…

Attualmente, negli Stati Uniti, mi viene da dire Febbre d’Amore. Le storie sono difficili da seguire e non sono appassionanti. Per questo io spero che le cose cambino perché questa soap ha un cast incredibile a sua disposizione!

La più sottovalutata?

Ancora una volta, Una vita da vivere!

La più tradizionale?

Penso che Così gira il mondo sia stata la soap convenzionale per eccellenza insieme a Sentieri nel senso più vero di ciò che la soap opera è stata. Penso che anche Il tempo della nostra vita fosse molto convenzionale, e nel momento in cui la nostra cultura ha cominciato a cambiare, queste soap hanno iniziato a discostarsi da essa.

 La meno convenzionale?

Ho amato Ai confini della notte (The Edge of the Night) - c'era sempre un mistero, un nuovo omicidio e alcuni dei personaggi erano così borderline e selvaggi. Anche se però gli ultimi anni di EON erano terribili. E sì, potrei mettere Santa Barbara al secondo posto e subito dopo Una vita da vivere.

Questa intervista è rivolta principalmente al pubblico italiano. Nel nostro paese, "Santa Barbara" era molto amata e seguita. Sei mai stato in Italia? Cosa sai del nostro paese? Vuoi dire qualcosa al pubblico italiano?

Ah l’Italia! Ho voluto così tanto e per così tanto tempo visitare il vostro paese. E stato al numero uno della mia lista per anni! Ecco una storia vera: avevo il mio visto ed era tutto pronto per venire in Italia nel 2001 con il cast di Beautiful. Quando ero a capo di SoapCity.com, abbiamo creato un concorso; i fans dovevano inviare i propri disegni che sarebbero poi stati giudicati dagli attori che interpretavano gli Spectra e i Forrester e il vincitore avrebbe ricevuto come premio un viaggio in Italia! Beautiful aveva in programma una grande trasferta italiana con tappe a Venezia, Firenze e Portofino. Abbiamo bandito il concorso, scelto i vincitori e io ero tutto pronto per il mio grande viaggio, ma poi si è verificato l’attentato alle Torri Gemelle! Vedi, il nostro viaggio era previsto per l’Ottobre di quello stesso anno. Inutile dire che Beautiful annullò il viaggio. Non ho mai visitato il tuo bel paese, ma ho nuovamente rinnovato il visto! Così, a Dio piacendo, spero di poterci venire nel corso dei prossimi anni. Posso dirti anche che la mia Nazionale di calcio preferita da sempre è proprio quella italiana, e quando avete vinto la Coppa del Mondo, ero in estasi! Sono un grande fan di Luca Toni, (dov’è ora? Mi manca!) E indosso spesso le t-shirt della Nazionale italiana quando vado in giro per Los Angeles. Ne ho di parecchi tipi!
